FIFA is considering expanding its squads for the 2022 World Cup

The squads for the Qatar World Cup in November and December could be increased from 23 to 26 players. FIFA is considering this, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

The coaches of the national teams and the officials from the federations will discuss whether to take this step at their meeting with FIFA on Friday before the draw for the group stage of the World Cup.

Because of COVID-19 and the use of five shifts per game, some have suggested allowing teams to have three more players.

UEFA admitted 26 teams to the European Championship last year, although only 23 players could be listed for each match.

The Confederation of South America CONMEBOL allowed the Copa America teams to have 28 players last year.

The final decision must be made by the FIFA Competition Organizing Committee and ratified by the world headquarters.
