Alaves fired his coach Abelardo Fernandez. The Barcelona legend leaves his post after losing 1: 3 to Celta Vigo. This was the seventh match in a row without a victory for the team. In the end, the management of Alaves decided to part with the specialist.
Abelardo took over from Alaves in January, replacing Pablo Machin. Under his leadership, however, the team won only 5 points in 11 games, taking the last place in the standings with 23 points - 3 from the rescue zone. There are 9 rounds left until the end of the campaign.
Abelardo was part of one of the best Barça teams in history, wearing the Catalan team between 1994 and 2002. He recorded over 170 games for the team, winning two titles, two King's Cups, two Spanish Super Cups and triumphed in the KNK tournament and also won the European Super Cup. He also won an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games with Spain.
